Halliday’s Historic Century Leads New Zealand’s Batting Charge

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe opted to bowl first, hoping to restrict the hosts on a relatively balanced surface. Early on, their decision seemed promising when they removed New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr for 15 and Emma McLeod for 35 within the first 16 overs.

However, what followed was a complete turnaround.

Brooke Halliday, coming in at No.4, took control of the innings with confidence and authority. She found an able partner in Maddy Green, and together the duo stabilized the innings with a crucial 121-run partnership.

Green played a steady role, scoring 67 runs, reaching her half-century from 65 deliveries. Meanwhile, Halliday was far more aggressive, reaching her fifty in just 45 balls with eight boundaries.

By the time Green was run out shortly after New Zealand crossed the 200-run mark in the 34th over, the hosts had already built a solid platform.

Halliday and Gaze Finish with Explosive Partnership

If Zimbabwe had any hopes of restricting the total, they quickly disappeared during the final phase of the innings.

Halliday joined forces with wicketkeeper Isabella Gaze, and the pair launched a blistering assault on the Zimbabwe bowlers. They added an unbeaten 151-run partnership for the fourth wicket in just 97 balls, accelerating the scoring dramatically.

Gaze played a rapid innings of 59 not out, bringing up her half-century in just 39 balls. In the 42nd over alone, she struck four boundaries off Beloved Biza.

Meanwhile, Halliday reached her maiden ODI century in 93 balls, marking a memorable milestone in her career. After reaching the hundred, she shifted gears even further.

She smashed Adel Zimunu for a four and a six before hammering Christabel Chatonzwa for four boundaries in a single over. Halliday required just 21 balls to move from 100 to 150, showcasing her incredible dominance.

New Zealand collected a remarkable 117 runs in the final 10 overs, finishing with a daunting total of 354 for 3.

Zimbabwe’s Chase Falters Despite Early Resistance

Chasing 355 runs was always going to be a daunting challenge for Zimbabwe.

Opener Modester Mupachikwa began positively, striking two early boundaries against Bree Illing. However, she was soon dismissed by Jess Kerr, leaving Zimbabwe under early pressure.

Zimbabwe’s best phase of the innings came through a partnership between Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and Kelis Ndhlovu. The pair added 93 runs for the second wicket, trying to keep the chase alive with cautious but steady batting.

Ndhlovu eventually reached her second ODI half-century, bringing up the milestone in 108 balls. However, she was dismissed on the very next delivery, which proved to be a turning point in the match.

From 142 for 2 in the 36th over, Zimbabwe’s innings collapsed rapidly.

Kerr Sisters Seal the Win with Seven Wickets

Once the breakthrough came, the New Zealand bowlers tightened their grip on the match.

Amelia Kerr delivered an exceptional spell, tearing through Zimbabwe’s middle order. She finished with 4 wickets for 35 runs, playing a major role in dismantling the batting lineup.

Her sister Jess Kerr provided excellent support, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs and wrapping up the tail with two wickets in consecutive deliveries.

Zimbabwe eventually folded for 174, suffering their largest defeat by runs in women’s ODIs.

NZ-W vs ZIM-W Series Begins with One-Sided Contest

The result means New Zealand Women continue their strong form against Zimbabwe, having already dominated the earlier T20I series on the tour.

For Zimbabwe, the match exposed significant gaps in both batting depth and bowling control. Despite a promising partnership in the chase, they struggled to maintain momentum against a disciplined New Zealand attack.

For New Zealand, the game will be remembered for Brooke Halliday’s spectacular maiden ODI century, a career-defining innings that placed her among the highest individual scorers in the country’s ODI history.

With the NZ-W vs ZIM-W ODI series now underway, the hosts will look to carry this momentum into the remaining matches, while Zimbabwe will hope to regroup and produce a more competitive performance in the next encounter.
