Fans of MS Dhoni have finally received encouraging news during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season. The legendary cricketer, who has been absent from the field so far, could soon make his much-awaited appearance for Chennai Super Kings in their upcoming fixture against Mumbai Indians.

Dhoni’s absence during the early part of the tournament had left fans disappointed, as many were eager to watch the iconic wicketkeeper-batter in action again. However, recent developments from the CSK camp suggest that the veteran star is close to regaining full fitness and could feature in the highly anticipated match scheduled at Wankhede Stadium on April 23.

Injury Delayed Dhoni’s Return

The 44-year-old former captain had been dealing with a minor injury during the pre-season training camp. According to reports from within the CSK camp, MS Dhoni suffered a strain in the back of his leg, which forced the team management to delay his participation in the early matches of the IPL 2026 season.

Team sources indicate that the experienced cricketer is now nearing full recovery. Recently, MS Dhoni was spotted practicing in the nets, which has sparked excitement among fans and analysts alike. Observers noted that he appeared comfortable while batting and did not show any visible signs of discomfort during the practice session.

While CSK are preparing for their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad, there has been no official confirmation yet on whether Dhoni will travel with the squad for that fixture. Nevertheless, the likelihood of his return against Mumbai Indians remains strong.

CSK’s Performance in IPL 2026 So Far

The start of the IPL 2026 campaign has been mixed for Chennai Super Kings. Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team currently sits eighth on the points table. CSK have played five matches so far, winning two and losing three.

The team initially struggled with three consecutive defeats but managed to regain momentum by securing back-to-back victories against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. These wins have helped restore some confidence within the squad as they aim to climb higher in the standings.

Interestingly, even during CSK’s home games, MS Dhoni has chosen to stay at the team hotel instead of being present on the field. However, he has remained actively involved in training sessions and team discussions.

Dhoni Active in Practice Sessions

Ahead of CSK’s recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders, MS Dhoni took part in a batting practice session under the guidance of batting coach Michael Hussey. During the session, he faced throwdowns and spent time sharpening his batting skills.

However, Dhoni did not face the team’s frontline fast bowlers during this practice. Instead, he focused on working with young “chinaman” spinner Noor Ahmad.

CSK bowling coach Sridharan Sriram revealed that Dhoni spent considerable time discussing bowling techniques with Noor Ahmad. According to Sriram, the conversation helped the spinner refine his leg-break deliveries and proved extremely beneficial for the youngster.

How MS Dhoni Could Fit into the Playing XI

During practice, MS Dhoni looked comfortable while striking the ball and showed no obvious difficulty during batting drills. With Chennai Super Kings regaining form after their recent victories, the team management will now need to carefully plan how to reintroduce Dhoni into the playing XI.

Currently, CSK’s batting lineup lacks depth, with bowlers occupying the number eight position in the order. This situation could open the door for Dhoni to return as a specialist batter or finisher.

One possible option is replacing Sarfaraz Khan in the playing XI. Although Sarfaraz has performed reasonably well, he struggled to accelerate the scoring during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he managed 23 runs from 18 balls.

Another possibility is that MS Dhoni could be used as an Impact Player, contributing with his batting while reducing the physical demands of full-time fielding.

Fans Await the Legend’s Return

For millions of cricket fans, the return of MS Dhoni remains one of the biggest storylines of IPL 2026. The veteran cricketer continues to command immense respect for his leadership, calm presence under pressure, and finishing abilities.

If Dhoni does return in the blockbuster clash against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, it is expected to be one of the most watched matches of the season. CSK supporters around the world will be hoping that their beloved icon steps back onto the field and once again delivers memorable moments in the Indian Premier League.
