In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season, Delhi Capitals have appointed former Ireland all-rounder John Mooney as their new fielding coach. The franchise is aiming to strengthen its support staff as it continues its long-standing quest for a maiden IPL title.
According to team sources, Mooney is expected to arrive in India shortly and will join the squad during the preparatory phase for IPL 2026. His appointment marks a fresh chapter for Delhi Capitals, who are looking to improve their on-field performance, particularly in the fielding department.

John Mooney Brings International Experience
John Mooney, aged 44, brings valuable international and coaching experience to the Delhi Capitals setup. He represented Ireland in more than 90 matches across One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals during his playing career. Known for his all-round abilities, Mooney played a crucial role in Ireland’s rise in international cricket and featured in three ICC ODI World Cups.
He played his final international match in 2015 and soon transitioned into coaching. Between 2018 and 2019, Mooney served as the fielding coach of the Afghanistan national team, where he contributed to improving their fielding standards. Later in 2019, he also had a brief stint with the West Indies team in a similar role.
This will be Mooney’s first assignment in the IPL, making his appointment with Delhi Capitals a notable milestone in his coaching journey.
Replacement in Coaching Staff
Mooney replaces Anton Roux and Gnaneswar Rao in the Delhi Capitals coaching setup. The franchise appears keen on bringing fresh ideas and international expertise into the team environment. With fielding becoming an increasingly decisive factor in T20 cricket, the inclusion of an experienced coach like Mooney could prove to be a strategic advantage.
Delhi Capitals Still Chasing Their First IPL Title
Despite being one of the original franchises since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Delhi Capitals are yet to win their first championship. Over the years, the team has shown glimpses of brilliance and has reached the playoffs multiple times, including a final appearance in 2020, but the elusive trophy continues to remain out of reach.
As IPL 2026 approaches, Delhi Capitals will be hoping that changes in the coaching staff, along with improved team performance, can finally help them secure their maiden title.
Delhi Capitals to Begin Campaign on April 1
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 in Lucknow. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST and will be part of the tournament’s opening phase.
Interestingly, the IPL schedule has been divided into phases this season due to upcoming elections in five states. Historically, whenever India has hosted general or state elections during the IPL (such as in 2009, 2014, 2019, and 2024), the tournament schedule has been released in parts to accommodate logistical and security considerations.
