BCCI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India is taking a decisive step toward rebuilding the country’s Test cricket future. With several legendary players having stepped away from the longest format in recent years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has designed a long-term development program aimed at nurturing young red-ball talent once the Indian Premier League season concludes.
The initiative is expected to focus on promising young cricketers such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, along with several other emerging players who have been making waves in domestic and franchise cricket. Through this plan, the BCCI hopes to build a strong pipeline of players capable of carrying India’s Test legacy into the next decade.
India’s Test Team in a Transitional Phase
In recent years, the Indian Test team has entered a period of transition. The retirements and gradual exit of several iconic players have left significant gaps in the lineup. The departure of stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin from the longest format has forced the team management and selectors to rethink their strategy for the future.
For years, India relied heavily on these experienced players to anchor the batting and bowling units. With them no longer part of the Test setup, young cricketers are now battling to secure their places in the team. The middle-order positions, particularly numbers three and four, have become areas of concern as the side searches for consistent performers.
The decline in India’s Test rankings over the past few seasons has also raised questions about the team’s depth in red-ball cricket. These challenges have prompted the BCCI to introduce a structured program that prioritizes the development of young players specifically for the Test format.
BCCI’s Center of Excellence Leads the Initiative
Following disappointing home Test series defeats against teams like New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team, the BCCI’s high-performance division has moved quickly to address the issue.
The new plan has been designed under the guidance of V. V. S. Laxman, who currently oversees the BCCI’s high-performance operations at the National Cricket Academy, now known as the Center of Excellence (CoE).
Under this initiative, a special inter-CoE red-ball tournament will be organized during June and July. The event will feature four-day matches involving some of India’s most promising young cricketers.
The tournament’s primary objective is to identify the country’s top 64 players under the age of 25. By giving them extensive match practice in longer-format games, the BCCI aims to expand India’s red-ball talent pool and ensure that the national team remains competitive in Test cricket for years to come.
How Players Will Be Selected
According to reports, the BCCI has instructed all coaches associated with the Center of Excellence, along with national selectors from different categories, to focus heavily on identifying and nurturing red-ball specialists.
This includes selectors from multiple levels of Indian cricket, such as senior national selection, the India A and emerging pathways programs, as well as age-group teams like Under-19 and Under-16. During the upcoming high-performance camps in Bengaluru, the main emphasis will be on preparing players for the demands of Test cricket.
A BCCI source familiar with the plan revealed that the roadmap will be finalized after detailed discussions with senior selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Their involvement will ensure that the program aligns with the long-term requirements of the Indian Test team.
Emerging Players to Get International Exposure
As part of the broader strategy, the BCCI will also create an “India Emerging” team consisting exclusively of players under the age of 25. These cricketers will not only participate in domestic red-ball competitions but will also travel with the India A squad on certain overseas tours as a “shadow team.”
This approach is intended to expose young players to international conditions and competitive environments before they graduate to the senior national side.
Once the IPL concludes, both the India Under-19 team and the emerging Under-25 squad are expected to travel to Sri Lanka. During the tour, they will compete in four-day matches designed to replicate the intensity and discipline required in Test cricket.
Performance in the inter-CoE tournament will play a key role in determining which players earn spots in these touring squads.
Structure of the Inter-CoE Tournament
The upcoming tournament will feature 64 players, who will be divided into four teams of 16 members each. Every team will play two four-day red-ball matches at the Center of Excellence.
To ensure comprehensive preparation, players will compete on a variety of pitch surfaces that simulate different international conditions. This will allow young cricketers to develop the technical skills, patience, and adaptability required to succeed in Test cricket.
Match practice over multiple days is considered essential for grooming players in the traditional format, where endurance, concentration, and tactical awareness play a crucial role.
Selection Breakdown
The selection process for the 64-player pool has been carefully structured.
- 25 players will be chosen by the junior selection committee.
- Another 25 players will be selected by the senior national selection panel.
- The remaining 14 spots will likely be filled by young cricketers currently participating in the IPL.
Several promising names from the league are expected to be part of the program if they remain fit and available. Among them are Ayush Mhatre, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sameer Rizvi, all of whom have attracted attention with their performances in domestic cricket and franchise tournaments.
