The Chennai Super Kings are preparing for a crucial phase in the IPL 2026 season, but former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has made a bold prediction that has sparked debate among cricket fans. According to Sehwag, the Chennai Super Kings may struggle to secure a place in the playoffs this year due to their current team composition and the time required for young players to develop.
The five-time IPL champions are currently led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy as the franchise began a new era focused on younger talent. CSK’s upcoming league match against Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, will be a key test of their progress this season.
Sehwag Predicts Difficult Season for Chennai Super Kings
Speaking on the cricket analysis platform Cricbuzz, Sehwag shared his honest assessment of the team’s chances in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 campaign.
He noted that CSK is currently in a rebuilding phase and has opted to invest heavily in young players. While this strategy could benefit the team in the long term, Sehwag believes it might take time before the squad becomes strong enough to consistently challenge for the title.
According to him, teams that rely on young talent often need two to three seasons to build a balanced and competitive lineup. Because of this transition period, Sehwag feels the Chennai Super Kings could struggle to reach the semifinals or playoffs in the current season.
However, he added that finishing as high as possible in the points table would still be a positive outcome. A respectable performance this year could lay the foundation for a much stronger CSK team in the coming seasons.

Sehwag Urges Key Indian Players to Step Up
While expressing doubts about the team’s immediate playoff prospects, Sehwag also offered important advice to the Chennai Super Kings batting unit. He emphasized that Indian batters must take greater responsibility if the team hopes to stay competitive throughout the tournament.
In particular, Sehwag highlighted players such as Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. According to him, at least two of these players need to deliver strong performances consistently, especially in the top and middle order.
He pointed out that the team’s success will depend heavily on whether these experienced Indian batters can anchor the innings and guide the younger players around them.
Shivam Dube’s Role Could Be Crucial
Sehwag also discussed the batting position of Shivam Dube, suggesting that the all-rounder should bat at number four unless the explosive young batter Dewald Brevis becomes available in the lineup.
If Brevis joins the playing XI, it could strengthen the middle order and provide additional firepower, potentially improving CSK’s chances of posting competitive totals.

Can Chennai Super Kings Prove Critics Wrong?
Despite Sehwag’s prediction, the Chennai Super Kings remain one of the most successful franchises in IPL history and have often surprised critics with their resilience. With a mix of emerging talent and experienced players, CSK will aim to prove that they can still compete with the league’s strongest teams.
As IPL 2026 progresses, all eyes will be on Gaikwad’s leadership and the performance of key batters. Whether the Chennai Super Kings can defy expectations and secure a playoff spot remains one of the most intriguing storylines of the season.
